  »Pete Murray

Pete whilst at Radio 1 1968

1970

In March 1973, Pete had the microphone snatched from his hand during a live Open House from Llandudno on St. David's Day. The Welsh language society voiced their request for a "Welsh channel now", (in Welsh).

The action coincided with interruptions to four other Radio Stations at Plymouth, Tyne Tees, Newcastle and Southampton.

Peter Murray James was born in 1928 and educated in London. He won a scholarship to RADA. He appeared in The Man Who Came to London at the Savoy Hotel, London, before joining the RAF during wartime. He then appeared in the Broadway show Power without Glory before joining RTL Radio Luxembourg in 1949 as a disc jockey, where he stayed for five years. Whilst in Luxembourg, he married a Luxembourg lady, Germain, in 1952.

He moved to the BBC Light Programme in 1958, with a show Pete’s Party whilst also working for Radio Luxembourg. Pete, along with Jimmy Savile, was a presenter on the first  Top Of The Pops in 1964.

Acting in the UK , he appeared in Television programmes until 1965 such as “the Last Enemy” (ITV) and compering on The Six Five Special and Juke Box Jury.

Pete joined the Pirates in 1965 with his show Call in at Curry’s (guess who the show was sponsored by?) heard on Radios Caroline and London, however, the BBC dropped his radio show soon after he was heard on these stations.

Joining Radio 1 at it’s launch, Pete Murray presented shows such as Pete’s People, What’s New and Family Choice (formerly Housewife's Choice), whilst continuing acting. He later moved exclusively to Radio 2, presenting the popular 'Open House' mid-morning music and magazine-style programme from 1970. He joined London's LBC 1152AM radio station in 1983.
